CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL CODER (CPC)

  • CPC is a widely recognized medical coding certification for coders working in outpatient / physician-office / ambulatory care / outpatient claims settings.
  • It shows proficiency in standard code sets and coding rules — primarily ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II.
  • This course is designed by American Academy of Professional Courses (AAPC)

CPC Exam Structure & Requirements

  • The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions.
  • Duration: 4 hours.
  • Passing Score: You must correctly answer at least 70% (i.e., 70 of 100).
  • Allowed Reference Materials: During the exam you are allowed to use the three standard code books — CPT (current year), ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II (current or prior year).
  • Eligibility & Credentials:
    • You can take the exam without prior work experience. If you pass but do not yet have 2 years coding experience, you earn the CPC-A (CPC Apprentice) designation.
    • Once you have required experience (or meet alternative requirements as per AAPC rules), you can convert to full CPC certification.

What CPC Exam Covers — Core Content Areas

The CPC exam tests broad knowledge across diagnoses, procedures, coding rules, compliance, and medical terminology. According to AAPC’s official and prep-course outlines, the key content includes:

Domain / Topic AreaWhat You Must Know / Skills
Medical Terminology & Anatomy / PhysiologyUnderstanding anatomy/physiology across body systems, medical terms, pathology basics.
ICD-10-CM CodingDiagnosis coding: applying official ICD-10-CM guidelines, conventions, code assignment, sequencing, specificity.
CPT CodingProcedure / service coding using CPT — including evaluation & management (E/M), surgeries, radiology, lab/pathology, anesthesia, etc.
HCPCS Level II Coding / Modifiers / SuppliesCoding things not covered in CPT: medical supplies, drugs, durable equipment, appropriate use of modifiers.
Coding Guidelines & ConventionsOfficial ICD-10 and CPT guidelines, modifier rules, appendices, NCCI (when applicable), correct code selection, avoiding upcoding / undercoding.
Compliance, Regulatory, Billing & Reimbursement BasicsUnderstanding compliance & regulatory requirements, proper documentation, insurance billing rules, ethical coding practices.
Knowledge Across Medical Specialties / Body SystemsCoding across broad specialties — integumentary (skin), musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary/renal, obstetrics/gynecology/maternity, anesthesia, pathology/lab, radiology, and more.

In short: CPC aims to ensure you can code nearly any outpatient / physician office encounter — from simple diagnosis & E/M visits to complex procedures, supplies, labs, imaging, etc.

Why CPC is Considered a “Gold Standard” Certification

Earning CPC provides several advantages:

  • Widely recognized internationally — gives credibility and increases employability.
  • Demonstrates mastery across all common code sets and coding rules (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS) and ensures readiness for physician-office, outpatient, ambulatory, and many other settings.
  • Helps coders stand out in competitive job markets; may lead to better pay and career opportunities.
  • Provides solid foundation if later you want to specialize (in hospital coding, home health, auditing, compliance, etc.).

What You Should Learn / Study to Prepare for CPC

Given the exam breadth, a good CPC preparation should include:

  • Strong foundation in medical terminology, human anatomy & physiology across all body systems.
  • Thorough understanding and frequent practice with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II code books.
  • Mastery of coding guidelines, conventions, modifier rules, documentation requirements, and compliance principles.
  • Practice coding across specialties — surgery, radiology, E/M, pathology/lab, medicine, anesthesia, supplies, etc.
  • Realistic coding scenarios using physician-office / outpatient documentation (operative reports, progress notes, procedural notes, labs, etc.).
  • Mock tests under timed conditions, with open-book format, using only permitted code books.
  • Ethical and compliance awareness — correct code selection, avoiding overcoding / undercoding, proper documentation.

Validity, Renewal & Designation Rules

  • Once certified, you must maintain certification with periodic requirements (AAPC requires Continuing Education Units, CEUs).
  • If you pass the exam but do not have 2 years coding experience, you are awarded CPC-A (Apprentice). Once you gain experience (or meet alternate criteria), you convert to full CPC.
